AN 1824 LEGION OF HONOR CITATION - A beautifully engraved official Brevet de l’Ordre Royal de la Légion d’Honneur, a Royal Legion of Honour certificate, issued during the Bourbon Restoration in France. Header: ”HONNEUR ET PATRIE” (Honor and Fatherland). This motto is part of the insignia of the Légion d’Honneur, France’s highest order of merit. Order Name: Ordre Royal de la Légion d’Honneur, (”Royal Order of the Legion of Honour”). The title ”Royal” was temporarily added during the Bourbon Restoration. Monarch Mentioned: Louis, par la grâce de Dieu, Roi de France et de Navarre, (”Louis, by the grace of God, King of France and of Navarre”). This would refer to Louis XVIII (reigned 1814–1824). Rank Bestowed: The certificate confers the title of Officer in the Order. Date: While slightly obscured, the series number (N° d'ordre 13854) and format suggest the early 1820s. Signatures: Le Grand Chancelier de l'Ordre Royal de la Légion d'Honneur. Stylized signature appears to be General Count Henri Gatien Bertrand, Grand Chancellor from 1823. Decoration: Rich allegorical engravings: winged figures, shields, trophies of arms, fleur-de-lis, and angels. The bottom border includes medallions and classical motifs. This certificate honors an individual with one of France’s most prestigious distinctions, in its monarchist form, used during the short-lived Bourbon Restoration.
