Bidspirit auction | AN ENGLISH RELIGIOUS NEEDLEWORK PICTURE,

AN ENGLISH RELIGIOUS NEEDLEWORK PICTURE, CIRCA 1810 - Worked in polychrome silk threads on a silk ground, depicting a robed hermit saint seated beneath a tree in a pastoral setting, a rustic hut to the left and distant mountains in the background. The figure, with beard and hood, holds a book, suggesting St. Francis or a similar contemplative subject. Executed in satin and long-and-short stitch with delicate shading to the sky in soft pinks and blues, framed within its original giltwood frame with beaded inner border. Such devotional and pastoral needlework panels were popular in Regency England, often produced in domestic settings by young women as part of their education. The rustic hermit figure and stylized natural setting are characteristic of early 19th-century taste, merging religious imagery with Romantic landscape themes.
