A SET OF EIGHT HAND-PAINTED PORCELAIN PLATES, BROWNFIELD & SONS, CIRCA 1880, RETAILED BY J.E. CALDWELL & CO., PHILADELPHIA - Each plate is finely decorated with a central hand-painted scene of rustic landscapes, cottages, sailing vessels, and windmills, within transfer-printed and gilt-patterned borders in alternating palettes of turquoise, lavender, and gilt. The reverse with printed Brownfield registration diamond, retailer’s mark J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia, and hand-painted pattern numbers. Note: William Brownfield & Sons of Cobridge, Staffordshire (1850–1899) was well known for high-quality earthenware and porcelain, with decorated tablewares exported widely, especially to America. J.E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia’s premier jeweler and luxury retailer, frequently commissioned and retailed fine English porcelain in the late 19th century.
