Item Overview

Description:

A GERMAN PORCELAIN FIGURAL GROUPING BY FURSTENBERG, 18TH C.

A GERMAN PORCELAIN FIGURAL GROUP, FÜRSTENBERG, 18TH CENTURY.

A finely modeled and polychrome enameled porcelain figure group depicting Bacchus seated on a wine barrel, draped in a deep red cloak, holding aloft a gilt goblet, accompanied by a young bacchante holding a wine flask and wineskin. Both figures are placed on a scrolling rocaille base heightened with green and gilt details.

The verso is marked with an underglaze blue "F" mark of the Fürstenberg manufactory.

Footnote: The Fürstenberg manufactory, founded in 1747 under Duke Charles I of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, produced fine hard-paste porcelain influenced by Meissen and other Saxon models. Bacchic groups were a popular subject of mid-18th-century porcelain, emblematic of conviviality and abundance.
