A FRENCH SILVER-HILTED SHORTSWORD, CA. 1740 - A scarce silver-hilted small sword for a musical band officer, ca. 1740. The blade is triangular-sectioned or hexagonal, richly decorated with gilded. The silver hilt is decorated with an imaginative array of Rococo masks and shells. The grip is bound in silver wire. The sword is a fine example of rococo-style decoration, favoring ornamental elegance over combat practicality. The double-shell guard and ornate knuckle bow are typical of prestigious court weapons.
