A GERMAN SMALLSWORD WITH ENGRAVINGS AND PIERCED HILT, C. 1720 - A fine 18th-century German steel smallsword, beautifully decorated with scrollwork and militaristic engravings along the first quarter of the triangular blade. The hilt comprised a clamshell guard with a pierced, basket-weave design and two chased hunting scenes, all within a border of flowers. The knucklebow, quillons, and pommel are all similarly pierced and decorated. The grip is of leather wrapped in twisted metal wire with a Turk's Head knot toward the bottom. Guard and wire grip-wire very slightly loose. Some pitting to blade consistent with age. Engravings retain evidence of gilding.
