A DEMETRE CHIPARUS BRONZE TITLED IDA RUBINSTEIN AS ZOBEIDA (FROM SCHEHERAZADE) - A dynamic and highly expressive bronze sculpture by Demetre Chiparus, portraying the legendary Russian dancer Ida Rubinstein in her iconic role as Zobeida from the ballet Scheherazade, choreographed by Michel Fokine for the Ballets Russes in 1910. The figure is captured mid-dance, in an elegant and dramatic pose with arms curved overhead, one leg raised, and flowing drapery swirling around her legs. The bronze displays Chiparus’s signature attention to graceful movement, feminine form, and theatrical detail. The sculpture is inscribed on the base: ”D. Chiparus”, ”N4” (edition number or model reference). A brass plaque reading: ”IDA RUBINSTEIN ZOBEIDA”. Mounted on a dark veined marble base, typical of Chiparus’s presentation style. Demetre Chiparus was one of the leading sculptors of the Art Deco era, famed for his bronze and ivory chryselephantine figures of dancers, actresses, and exotic performers. Inspired by the Ballets Russes, he immortalized several famed dancers, including Josephine Baker and Ida Rubinstein, capturing the glamour and theatricality of the period. Ida Rubinstein (1885–1960) was a Russian ballerina, actress, and patroness of the arts.
