A BRONZE FIGURE OF A BULL BY MALVINA HOFFMAN, AMERICAN, 1953 - Malvina Hoffman (American, 1887-1966), a patinated bronze sculpture ”Charging Bull, ” 1953, edition 3/4, signed and dated on bronze base ”Malvina Hoffman/1953”, Bedi-Rassy Foundry (unmarked). Provenance: Conner - Rosenkranz, New York (label underside); Christie's New York: November 29, 2005, lot 738, sold for $5,040 with premium (label underside); Private Collection, Kansas City. Malvina Hoffman was an American sculptor and author. She studied bronze casting, chasing, and finishing at foundries under Auguste Rodin. Hoffman became famous internationally for her sculptures of ballet dancers, such as Vaslav Nijinsky and Anna Pavlova, who often posed for her. Hoffman also created portrait busts of working-class people, and her sculpture series of culturally diverse people, entitled Hall of the Races of Mankind, was a popular permanent exhibition at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
