HELENE SARDEAU (1899-1968) BRONZE ”JAZZ SINGER”, C. 1928 - A bronze titled 'Jazz Singer' by the Belgian born sculptor Helene Sardeau (1899-1968). She lived and worked in Paris until 1931, when she married the American artist George Biddle. She subsequently moved with him to New York City where she studied under the famed American artist Mahonri Young and expanded her career amongst her new audience. This piece depicts an African-American man dressed in a suit, seated on a small stool and singing passionately with his face upturned towards the sky. It is signed by the artist and dated 1928 and includes a foundry mark from the Valsuani Foundry in Paris. A cast of this piece was exhibited at the 1928 Salon d'Automne in Paris.
