A SIGNED AUGUSTE CARLI (1868-1930) BRONZE OF A WISE OLD MAN, 1920 - A finely sculpted bronze of a wise old man in flowing robes, composed by the French artist Auguste Carli (1868-1930) in the year 1920. The piece is signed and dated on the side and top of the base respectively. August Carli was an important figure in the Marseilles art scene, sculpting many lasting monuments which can be found throughout the city today, including the two large sculptures on either side of the grand staircase of the Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles, entitled 'Marseille colonie grecque' and 'Marseille Porte de l'Orient', as well as the tomb of the French artist Monticelli in the Palais Longchamp, in addition to many other works. He and his younger brother, François, left such an impression on the city that a town square is named after them to this day, the 'Place Auguste et François Carli'. France, 1920.
