A LARGE EUROPEAN EXECUTIONER'S AXE HEAD, C. 16TH CENTURY - A large European executioner's axe head, likely from the first half of the 16th century in Italy, with a broad, beveled edge with signs of past sharpening in the days of its use. The axe has a short beard as well as a very long extension of the edge upward, both with pointy ends. The head is stamped with 4 marks, 3 near to the neck that appear as florets, the last toward the top center which appears to be a maker's mark showing a shape reminiscent of an upside-down anchor in a shield-shaped recess.
