A RENAISSANCE CRUCIFIX, HAND PAINTED, ATTRIBUTED TO JACOPO DEL SELLAIO (1441-1493) - Attributed to Jacopo del Sellaio, Italian, (ca. 1441–1493). Processional crucifix (recto/verso) in the Italian Gothic style. Made of carved wood, tempera and gold on wood, a common medium of devotional art from that period. The work shows Christ crucified at the center, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist on the cross's arms, both shown in mourning, as is typical. At the top is likely a depiction of God the Father or Christ in Majesty. At the same time, the bottom may originally have shown Golgotha or a symbolic tomb (now partially obscured or darkened). This object would have served as an altarpiece or processional cross in a church or monastic setting. The delicate cloverleaf-shaped terminals and the original gilded background suggest high craftsmanship and liturgical importance. Provenance: A New York Private Collection.
