A MEISSEN FIGURES THE GERMAN BACCHUS MODEL D 13, JOHANN C. SCHOENHEIT, CA 1880 - A rare group of Meissen figures dubbed ”German Bacchus”, by sculptor Johann Carl Schoenheit (1730-1805). The piece is an interpretation of the Ancient Greek legends regarding Dionysus, god of wine and revelry - known as Bacchus to the Romans. It features a male figure (Dionysus/Bacchus) atop a wine barrel, a boyish satyr playing the trumpet, a girl pouring wine from a spigot, and a boy taking notes whist shouldering a small wine jug. The piece is dubbed ”German Bacchus” due to its Rococo-style clothing and theme as opposed to its ancient mythological source. Germany, ca. 1880 Please make all inquiries before bidding.
