1791 KING GEORGE III PRIVY SEAL, GRANT OF TITLE OF BARONET TO SIR GEORGE CHAD, PLANTATION OF ULSTER - A very large vellum document bearing the privy seal of King George III, granting Sir George Chad (1730-1815), Recorder of King's Lynn, the title of Baronet of Thursford, in addition to granting him the right to begin a plantation in the province of Ulster in Ireland, dated 1791 (written as 'the thirty first year of his reign'). The document consists of two large pages sewn together at the bottom and affixed with a braided cord to which is attached the remains of King George III's privy seal. Above the seal is the text 'By Writ of Privy Seal' and 'Yorke'. Each page has been lavishly decorated with engraved borders showing many symbols of royal authority as well as busts of the King and Queen. To the top left, below a large portrait of George III, is the original 40 shilling tax stamp. While the Plantation of Ulster is a largely 17th century phenomena, the creation and maintenance of these plantations continued through to the 19th century causing much stress on Irish society. Within 7 years of George Chad receiving this Baronetcy Ireland would see the founding of both the Society of United Irishmen and the Orange Order, as well as the great rebellion of 1798, marking this as one of the most harrowing and pivotal moments in Irish history.
