A 1493 GROUP OF 3 WOODCUT PORTRAITS, SAINTS BERNARD AND ANTONINUS, NUREMBERG CHRONICLE - Three clipped portraits from the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most famous of the early incunable printings of Europe and one of the first to successfully combine illustrations and text. Its creation involved the workshop of Michael Wohlgemuth, the mentor of Albrecht Durer, and was published by Anton Koberger, Durer's Godfather. The first portrait shows Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the co-founders of the famous crusading order of the Templar Knights and the mastermind of their code. The second portrait shows Saint Antoninus of Florence, an important church reformer who was considered a true man of the people. He helped the common folk greatly during the plague and earthquake of 1448 and 1453 and made a point to visit all the parishes of his diocese on foot every year. The third and final portrait is of Antonio Roselli, a Renaissance Italian legal scholar. He was the mediator between King Ladislaus III of Poland and the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund during their conflict and also Pope Eugene IV's conflict with the same Sigismund. He previously had acted as a legal consultant for Pope Martin V. To the lower right of this clipping are the remnants of some very old handwriting, possibly of the era. Nuremberg, Germany, 1493.
