A VICTORIAN GILT SHEFFIELD CENTERPIECE, 19TH CEN. - A mid-victorian gilt silver-plated pink granite vessel and cover with the mark of Jonas & George Bowen, Birmingham, 1859-1877. The cylindrical pink granite body is on a stepped circular foot, with acanthus capped bifurcated double-serpent form handles springing from ram heads, the hinged lid is engraved with geometric borders centering a thistle-form finial, marked on the underside 10 ¾ in., (27.3 cm.) long, over handles. This piece was likely commissioned by a wealthy Scottish patron, as the thistle is their National flower, and the granite appears to be of a type sourced from the West coast of Scotland.
