A RARE RUSSIAN PORCELAIN TEAPOT, GARDNER C. 1790
This rare and exquisite teapot is a fine example of work by Russian porcelain masters at the Gardner factory in the late 18th century. The body is decorated on both sides with a bouquet of yellow and orange or pink and red flowers. The spout is carved in the form of a mythical sea horse with scales running down the neck to the base, all adorned with gilt. The top simulates the rising of a Russian epic hero's head with a full beard and mustache painted en grisaille, mounting the sea horse and adorned with the helmet of a German knight which acts as the cover for the pot. The pot's handle is shaped in the form of two nude boys, one resting on the neck of the other. The entire pot is erected upon a foot carved in a clawlike shell shape with gilt and blue paint accenting the feet. The underside bears a maker mark of blue underglaze crossed swords and an asterisk. There is also the number '2131' carved next to the mark.
