A MIDDLE-EASTERN BRONZE MACEHEAD, CA. 1000 BC

A bronze mace-head originating possibly from the Middle East dating CA 1000BC. The macehead is of an elliptical design with 8 protruding nubs. Each nub has 2 circular etchings giving them each an almost spiral quality. These nubs were fashioned as a means of enhancing the mace's attacking ability as well as for decorative purposes. As representations of status and power, maces were used not only in warfare but also for ceremonial purposes such as coronations or funeral rites. Maceheads originally were made of stone before harnessing metals, such as bronze, to prevent the heads from shattering. This macehead shows signs of oxidizing from age which has caused some of the etchings on the protruding nubs to have faded over time.

Late Bronze Age Middle East - CA. 1000 BC

L: 3 1/2 in., (8.9 cm.)

Condition: Overall good quality. Bronze metal is oxidized and dirty. Some of the nubs have lost details.
