A CLAY RHYTON IN THE FORM OF A HORSE, CA. 700 BC
A clay vessel similar to a later rhyton in function, in the shape of a horse with a stylized, tube-like face. It is decorated with many incisions, primarily to represent hairs in the mane, and bears what appears to be the legs of a rider who is no longer extant on this example. The back of the horse is pierced with a hole leading to the belly, which is hollowed out to act as a container. The tube of the face is likewise hollowed out and leads down the neck and into the belly. The tail of the horse is shaped to act as a handle.
Ancient Mediterranean World - CA. 700 BC
H: 7 in., ( cm.); L: 6 1/4 in., ( cm.)
Condition: Good overall with surface wear due to age. Remnants of additional figure evidence what may have been a rider on the horse's back.
