A PORTRAIT PHOTO OF COMMANDER E. F. STONE, CA. 1919
Commander Elmer Fowler Stone was the U.S. Coast Guard's first Aviator and one of the pilots of the famous NC-4 that completed the first successful Trans-Atlantic flight in history. He participated in the testing and development of many aircraft technologies, many of which are still used by the military and civilians alike to this day.
Famously, he was the only pilot willing to attempt a water landing to rescue survivors of the ZRS-4 dirigible, known as the USS Akron, after it crashed into the ocean during a storm off the coast of New Jersey. He succeeded in landing in the heavy seas, but it was too late to rescue anyone else.
There are pencil and pen signatures and writing on the back of the photograph.
10 x 7 3/4 in., (25.4 x 19.7 cm.)
Condition: Very good overall, with expected yellowing due to age, some minor marks on the back.
