A HAND-HAMMERED GILT-COPPER RELIEF DEPICTING ARCHANGEL GABRIEL - Rare and beautifully detailed image of Archangel Gabriel wearing armour hand-hammered on a gilt-copper plaque. Presumably Bizantine or Greek. Images of saints in military dress are rare in Early Byzantine art but typical of the Middle Byzantine period. 12 1/4 x 9 3/8 in., (31.12 x 23.81 cm.) Condition: The metal appears to be in good condition. No visible signs of restoration.
