AN 18 C IMPERIAL RUSSIAN M1797 OFFICER'S SPONTOON PIKE HEAD
A rare M1797 Russian Imperial Army officer's spontoon head. There are three letters in Cyrillic "Л. Ðœ. П." on each side below the coat of arms. The last two letters stand for "Musketeer Regiment" (Мушке&N tilde;‚ерÑк&ET H;¸Ð¹ полк) .
Footnote:
In the late 18th - early 19th centuries spontoons were part of the full dress of senior officers (except adjutants) on formal occasions in Grenadier and Musketeer Regiments, Garrison Regiments and Battalions, Guards Infantry Regiments and Cadet Corps. In 1806 they were withdrawn from (не пони ;маю здеÑ&Ntil de;Œ значРµÐ½Ð¸Ðµ ÑтогÐ&fra c34; глагÐ& frac34;ла) Cadet Corps officers and in 1807 for all of the other officers previously authorized to carry one.
For a similar spontoon please refer to A. N. Kulinskii, "Russian Edged Weapons" 18-20 pp., part I, St Petersburg, 2001, pp. 276-277, plate # 116.
