A ROMMEL 50TH BIRTHDAY PERSONALIZED SILVER-MOUNTED ASHTRAY
Given on his birthday during his first year in North Africa and during the siege of Tobruk. The ashtray is fine jeweler-mounted hand-hammered silver on wood with an engraving on the rim: "Zum 50. Geburtstag Die Offiziere der Panzergruppe Afrika Unserem Befehlshaber Gen. d. Pz. (signature) Rommel" translated to "To his 50th Birthday. [From] The Officers of Panzer Group Afrika. [To] Our Commander, General der Panzer, Rommel."
While Rommel himself never smoked nor drank, he had to entertain a variety of guests who often did. This practicality necessity is seen in many smoking sets of non-smokers of that era, such as Adolf Hitler himself. In its original condition, came from a private collection in PA.
D: 7 1/4 in., (18.5 cm.)
Condition: Good overall, there are scratches on the wooden base. The rim has a small dent.
