A SCARCE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF HOLY TRINITY, 16TH CEN.
Russian Orthodox icon of the Holy Trinity of the Old Testament. Tempera, gold leaf, gesso on wood. The upper zone features images of the chambers of Abraham, the Mamre oak and Mount Moriah. The central part depicts the scene of the angels' meal.This iconography goes back to the tradition of “Trinity” by Andrei Rublev. Rublev's icon became a model for many generations of icon painters. This model acquired particular significance in the culture of the 16th century - thus, the Stoglav Council of 1551 approved: “Painters should paint icons from ancient models, as Greek painters painted and as Andrei Rublev and other notorious painters...”.Second half of the 16th century.
Dimensions: 28 3/5 x 23 in., (72 x 58.5 cm.)
Condition: Good with a crack and expected signs of age and wear. Small spot at the top with a sing of restoration (touch-up)
