Letter from Rav Shmuel Salant Ob'm, fully handwritten, - Jerusalem 1885. - Letter signed by Rabbi Shmuel Salant, Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, to the Rabbis of Amsterdam concerning the 'Chaluka' (distribution) funds - Jerusalem, Shevat 1885. Entire letter in handwriting.  * The Famed Gaon Rabbi  Shmuel Salant  (1816 - 1909), Born to his father Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch, who served as the city rabbi of Valerisa. In his youth, he studied with his father, then later in Salant and at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He was ordained as a rabbi by the Gaon R' Avraham Aveli Pasveler, the head of the Vilna Rabbinical Court, and the Gaon R' Yaakov Bruchin, the rabbi of Karlin. He married the daughter of the Gaon R' Yosef Zundel of Salant. He immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1841. He served as the head of the Ashkenazi Beit Din (rabbinical court) in Jerusalem, under the patronage of his father-in-law, who was the halachic authority for the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem. In 1866, upon the passing of his father-in-law, he was appointed in his place as the halachic authority for the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem, and community affairs were also conducted according to his rulings, until his passing on the 29th of Av, 1909.
