R' Yaakov Yosef. Chief Rabbi of New York. L'beis Yaakov. Drashos on the Torah and various occasions such as siyums, Chanukah etc. 2 volumes. 2 pages have comments on the margin. Second volume is missing title page. Vilna, 1888. Good condition. Loose binding. Front cover detached. There is also a response that he received from "my freind who is dear to me"- Rav Chaim Ozer. Rav Yaakov Yosef was the first and last chief Rabbi of New York. He learned in his youth in Volozhin where he was known as Yaakov Charif (the sharp one). He later learned by Rav Yisroel Salanter and became one of his close disciples. He served as Dayanin various Lithuanian communities before becoming Dayan in Vilna. In 1888 he accepted an offer from the Jewish community in New York to serve as chief Rabbi, a position he held until he passed away in 1902. He established a Yeshiva, as well as the famed Agudas Harabanim. He also instituted major improvements in shechita, although he faced stiff resistance. His funeral was attended by over 100,000 people.
