Siddur. Sephardic rite. Amsterdam, 1771

Spectacular siddur with ornate leather binding and clasps

Siddur with weekday and Shabbos prayers in Sephardic rite.
This siddur includes the Tefillas Hashkavah for Kedoshim burned alive in the notorious auto-da-fés.

Beautiful copy in pristine condition with gilded edges and engravings. Antique red leather binding dating back to the printing era, with numerous gilded engravings and metal clasps.

Leaf 159b bears the printer’s handwritten autograph and insignia of Jacob da Silva Mendes.

[6] final leaves comprise a 114-year calendar (1770-1883) in Hebrew and Spanish.

Includes Sefer Toldos Ha’adam, which is an order of blessings and prayers from the time a person is born until his passing.

The beginning of the siddur features an approbation by Rabbi Shlomo Shalem, Rav of the Sephardic congregation in Amsterdam.

Tefillas Hashkavah for Kedoshim
In addition to the regular tefillos for weekday and Shabbos, this siddur also includes special prayers and piyyutim, among them “Hashkavas Srufim al Kiddush Hashem”, a special prayer recited upon those murdered in the auto-da-fés during the era of the Inquisition.
The majority of the Sephardic congregation in Amsterdam descended from the anusim (Marranos) who fled Spain during the era of the Inquisition and Expulsion and in the years thereafter.

Amsterdam, 1771. Page Count: [1], 159, [6] leaves. Page Size: 17.7 cm. Preserved in new cloth-covered cardboard case.
