Tzena U’re’ena. Hamburg, 1714

The most popular disseminated work in the history of Yiddish literature

*

Commentary and anthology of Midrashim and stories in Yiddish on the Chamishah Chumshei Torah, Haftaros and Five Megillos by Rabbi Yaakov ben Rabbi Yitzchak Ashkenazi of Yanov.

Tzena U’re’ena is the most popular disseminated work in the history of Yiddish literature extensively used by Jewish Yiddish speaking women for generations. Due to the immense popularity and extensive use of this sefer throughout the ages, there is not a single known extant copy of its earliest editions, and even 18th century copies of the Tzena U’re’ena are rarities.

The Jewish printer Yitzchak de Cordoba of Amsterdam operated his press between the years 1809-1814 in the city of Hamburg, printing only several books during this period.

It is exceedingly rare to find an early 18th century copy of the Tzena U’re’ena complete and in good condition.

Hamburg, 1714. [1], 125 leaves. Page size: 33 cm. Complete copy. signs of use; reinforcements on margins of several pages. Good condition.  Antique quarter-leather worn binding.

The front and back flyleaf list dates of birth and death between the years 1805-1823 from the city of Ellrich (near Halberstadt).
