Chamishah Chumshei Torah with Original Artistic Binding. Antwerp, 1566
Chamishah Chumshei Torah and Five Megillos with punctuation and cantillation marks, printed at the order of the Minister of Bomberg. This is one of the very first sefarim printed in Antwerp.
The Plantin Press Chumash was printed by 16th century book printer and publisher Christophe Plantin. Plantin collaborated with the famous Bomberg family, acclaimed Venetian printers, who furnished him with the fine Hebrew typefaces that enabled him to print this edition of the Chumash.
A magnificent copy in pristine condition, ornately bound in expensive parchment and engraved with various figures, most prominently a horseback rider surrounded by a crowd of admirers. The bottom of the cover is engraved with the year 1582.
Chapter markings were added by hand on margins, and verses were numbered by hand in red ink. Page numbers in Roman numerals were likewise written by hand in red ink.
