NORTH WEST COMPANY TOKEN WITH BEADED NECKLACE - On April 24th 1779 several Montreal based fur merchants joined forces to form the North West Company. Over the next 4 decades the conglomerate engaged in an intense competition with the Hudson's Bay Company for control of the Canadian Fur Trade. This brass ”beaver token” was issued by the North West Company in 1820 to represent the value of prime beaver pelt. Previously owned by the renowned anthropology museum The Museum of US, formerly known as the Museum of Man.
