AL WILLIAMS GULFHAWK PLANE FABRIC PIECE
Silver and red fabric piece from the Gulfhawk plane, flown by Al Williams in 1935, inscription on verso 'This fabric came off Al William's ship the 'Gulf Hawk' - Tues. Jan. 22, 1935', 10.75 x 13 inches. Al Williams (1896-1958), a U.S. Navy test pilot, newspaper columnist, and aerobatic daredevil, he used his syndicated columns and aerial shows to lobby for increased investment into military aviation, believing it would be useful in the growing conflict in Europe. Williams also has been called the 'Father of Dive Bombing', and set the record for speed flying at 266.7 mph. William's air shows impressed German WWI fighter ace, Ernst Udet that he went on to purchase two Curtiss Gulfhawks, paid for by Hermann Goering, and brought them back to Germany for study. The design of the Curtiss Gulfhawks inspired the designed of the German Ju 87 Stuka, the Do 17, and the He 111.
