GACKENBACH (1923-2019), 'The 509th Remembered: A History of the 509th Composite Group as Told by the Veterans that Dropped the Atomic Bombs on Japan.' Gackenbach, a 2nd Lieutenant in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron and in the 509th Composite Group, was the navigator on board the 'Necessary Evil' and was tasked with photographing the aftermath of the Little Boy bomb on Hiroshima. On August 9, 1945, he was part of the crew on the Enola Gay to report on the weather over Kokura. The weather made it impossible to drop the bomb visually over Kokura, so ultimately the Fat Man bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Book revised in 2010. Edited by Robert and Amelia Krauss. 11 x 8.5 inches.
