REMI SCHRIJNEN - (1921-2006) A Belgian volunteer in the German army and a Flemish Nationalist. He fought in the Battle of Leningrad and the Battle of Narva. During Narva, he single-handedly destroyed eleven tanks. He was injured and then later awarded the Infantry Assault Badge, the Wound Badge in gold, and the 1st and 2nd class Iron Cross, the only Flemish volunteer to receive the Iron Crosses. After the war, he returned to Belgium and was tried. He was symbolically convicted to death, which corresponds to life imprisonment. He was released in 1950 and participated in 'amnesty marches', advocating for 'heroes of the Eastern Front' to be released. Flemish volunteers were beaten by the Belgian public and soon Schrijnen and other volunteers fought back. This resulted in Schrijnen being held in prison for two years. He is known as 'The Last Knight of Flanders'. Signed twice in blue ink with an explanation on the verso, 4 x 6 inches.
