U.S.S. HOGGATT BAY YEOMAN'S DOCUMENT FOLDER
Ship folder from the U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay (CVE-75), a Casablanca-class escort carrier of the United States Navy. The folder includes a three-page typed copy of the story of the U.S.S. HOGGATT BAY on the ship's letterhead; a copy of a typed message from Admiral H.M. MARTIN, Commander Task Force 44 to [American] 'Senior Prisoners of War' reading in part: 'We are going to drop supplies as long as you need them. The war is over...keep your chin up and we will do everything in our power to get you out and home...We will make them pay dearly.' A copy of a news memo, 10 September 1945, informing the ship's crew of a POW camp on the island of Hokkaido and the Hoggart Bay sent many reconnaissance planes; copies of daily plans for June, July, and September 1945; several pages of a ship's newsletter the 'Subduer'; 16 pages of telegraphed news, six pages of test questions for promotion to Yeoman third class; muster roll for the Hoggartt Bay. U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay made two trips to Pearl Harbor and was supporting airstrikes for the operation in the Marianas, Peleliu, Ulithi, and the Philippines. In April 1945 the USS Hoggatt Bay sailed to the Far East, this time headed for Okinawa to support the upcoming invasion. In the subsequent months, the USS Hoggatt Bay would support invasions and attacks in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Aomori. During these missions, her planes would locate a few Japanese prison camps and, in turn, have the honor of rescuing Lieutenant Colonel James Devereux, who had been captured during battles at Wake Island.
