Rare American WWII public announcement broadside, 14 x 22 inches, issued by the Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Wartime Civil Control Administration, Presidio of San Franciso, California. About 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry, most of whom lived on the Pacific Coast, were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in the western interior of the country. Approximately two-thirds of the internees were United States citizens. These actions were ordered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. EXCLUSION ORDER - 'NOTICE Headquarters Western Defense Command and Fourth Army Presidio of San Francisco, California, May 5, 1942. 'Pursuant to...Public Proclamations Nos. 1 and 2, this Headquarters, dated March 2, 1942, and March 16, 1942, respectively, it is hereby ordered that from 12 o'clock noon, P.W.T., of Monday, May 11, 1942, all persons of Japanese ancestry, both alien and non-alien, be excluded from that position of Military Area No. 1...Any person...who fails to comply...will be subject to immediate apprehension and internment...', signed in print J.L.
