WALTER BEDELL SMITH - (1895-1961) American general who served as Eisenhower's chief of staff during the Tunisia Campaign and the invasion of Italy in 1943. From 1944 to 1945 chief of staff at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF). After the war, he served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1946 to 1948. Signed and inscribed sheet as Ambassador: 'For Barbera, with best wishes Walter B Smith Ambassador of the U.S.' With a period 'Associated Press Wirephoto from Signal Corps Radiophoto' of Smith signing the armistice with Italy (Armistice of Cassibile).
