August 1939. Marquardt was a member of Flak.Ers. Kp. 55 from 1.11.40. On 30.5.40. his Soldbuch records an injury to his hip due to grenade shrapnel. About two years later, in Russia on 23.1.42, he was shoot through his knee joint, followed by amputation, the record states he was at Kriegslazarett 2/531 (Wjasma, Russia, advance on Moscow). Marquardt was awarded the wound badge in black and silver, the Schuetzenabzeichen 1. Stufe (shooting lanyard 1st grade), Iron Cross second class, the Sturmabzeichen (General Assault Badge), and the Ostmedaille 1941/42 (Eastern Medal).
