This example represents Chapter 17, ”Eawase” (Picture Contest), paired with the figure Yaegaki-hime. The composition depicts the elegantly dressed Yaegaki-hime reclining beside a writing table, surrounded by elaborate textile patterns and a scroll-form cartouche above. Kuniyoshi's signature ”Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga” appears at right, together with seals and publisher markings. A finely detailed example of mid-19th-century ukiyo-e, displaying Kuniyoshi's characteristic use of intricate textile patterns, expressive figural composition, and layered literary imagery. The print has been professionally backed with linen for preservation and stabilization. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861, Japan) was a leading artist of the Utagawa school and one of the most influential ukiyo-e designers of the late Edo Period. He is particularly celebrated for his warrior subjects, historical and legendary scenes, beautiful women, landscapes, and imaginative compositions.
