Monumental Japanese Satsuma Moriage Porcelain Vase - Monumental Japanese Satsuma-style porcelain palace or floor vase of extraordinary scale, standing approximately 5'11” tall. The elongated baluster-form body rises to a tall neck and dramatically flared mouth and is extensively decorated with hand-painted figural and landscape scenes surrounded by exceptionally dense floral and foliate ornament. Large reserves depict elegantly dressed figures in garden and waterside settings with flowering trees, mountains, birds, bridges and architectural elements. Deep green decorative fields are filled with intricate floral patterns and accented throughout with raised moriage-style enamel work and extensive gilt detailing. Numerous ornamental borders divide the composition, creating a highly elaborate surface from the foot through the neck and flared rim. According to the previous owner, the vase was brought from Japan to the United States by an American serviceman following World War II and was subsequently presented as a wedding gift.
