He became the first American sculptor to receive the prestigious Salon Gold Medal in Paris. Schuler created numerous public monuments, particularly throughout Maryland and Washington, D.C., and his work is represented in major museum collections. In addition to his artistic achievements, he served for more than 25 years as president of the Maryland Institute College of Art.
