Guy Deel Signed Drawings Pair on Paper - Pair of signed drawings on paper by Guy Deel (American, 1933-2005). One drawing depicts a man in a hat aiming a rifle, while the other shows two men and a child, with one man aiming a rifle. Both drawings are mounted on white backing boards, the largest measuring 15-3/8” x 9-1/4”. Guy Deel was born in Tuxedo, Texas Dell was the son and grandson of cowboys and his family homesteaded in Texas in 1887. He began his 50-year career at 17, working in Dallas at an animation studio. In 1955 he graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. During the 1950's Deel spent two years working on Governor's Island in New York City creating recruiting posters for the Army. During that time he also worked doing illustrations for major publications such as ”Esquire,” ”Readers' Digest,” ”Ladies Home Journal,” and ”The Saturday Evening Post.” Moving to California in the early 1960s, Deel continued doing magazine illustrations, as well as working as an art director and director in television and film production. In 1974 Deel began working with Walt Disney Studios, an association that would continue for many years over many different projects. In 1976 Deel began doing book covers for several paperback publishers including Bantam, Berkley-Jove, and Signet. A prolific artist, he created over 250 book covers for writers such as Louis Lamour, J. T. Edson, Elmer Kelton, Ernest Haycox, Dalton Walker, Will Henry, Lewis B. Patten, Gary McCarthy, Lauren Paine, Jason Manning, Giles A. Lutz, Jim Miller, and more. Deel's most epic work was the extraordinary 138' mural he created for the Museum of the American West (formerly the Gene Autry Museum) in Los Angeles, His passion was always telling the story the American West. He told interviewer Carol Lea Clark in a 1988 ”Southwest Art” magazine story, ”Not many artists have a chance to portray the story of our country in epic form seen by millions over who knows how many years.
