"Thus Fought and Won the Youth of the World" – A Photographic Book from the 1936 Berlin Olympics: Sports, Propaganda, and the Overt and Covert Nazi Messages
H., München - "Thus Fought and Won the Youth of the World" – XI. Berlin Olympics 1936 – With 124 Illustrations on Art Print Plates – A Photographic Book from the Berlin Olympics, Edited by Franz Miller (the Official Olympic Announcer). Published by Derlag Knorr & Hirth G.m.b.H., Munich, 1936 – Second Edition.
A special publication summarizing the 1936 Berlin Olympics, held under the auspices of Nazi Germany. The album is accompanied by dozens of photographic plates from the events of the Olympics, with some featuring the Nazi swastika flag, accompanied by patriotic descriptions praising Nazi Germany and the Führer. Notable events include photographs of Adolf Hitler’s entrance to the stadium, with captions such as "The Führer has arrived", "The Führer salutes the winning flag", "Raising the Führer’s flag", and images of senior Nazi party officials. All descriptions are written in the spirit of "The New Germany under the Führer’s leadership, " where the achievements of athletes from other countries are deliberately downplayed in comparison to the achievements of German athletes.
At the beginning of the album, words of admiration for German athletes appear as a tribute and expression of gratitude to Adolf Hitler: "Leader of the Reich Sports Group, Hans von Tschammer und Osten, who was appointed State Councilor for his generous leadership in German sports on the last day of the games, and his brave team fulfilled what they had solemnly promised the Führer. They did even more—not only did they fight honorably and chivalrously against the best youth in the world... 33 gold medals, 26 silver, and 30 bronze medals are available... the most beautiful gift that German sports could give to the Leader..." writes Franz Miller in the introduction. Miller continues his introduction with words of admiration for the Führer, using the Olympic Games as a tool of Nazi propaganda: "The Leader remained among us almost every day. This lively and connected participation filled our guests with wonder and admiration, and they truly envied us for this man who, through his actions, became the patron and promoter of these games. Here, they did not see the representative of a people, but the Leader, whose enthusiastic presence they could witness with their own eyes. The outpouring of love and admiration that millions of Germans showed the Führer during these Olympic Games opened the eyes of many, who had often been misled by certain newspapers into believing that Adolf Hitler would not dare to emerge from the shadows. But in Berlin, they saw him every day sitting among his people, who worshiped him and cheered for him enthusiastically. During these happy weeks, countless foreigners came to know and respect the New Germany, and they became messengers of truth. They left as our friends, with the knowledge that we did not seek to reap glory with these games, but rather justice for our New Germany. Today, we know, and with us the whole world, that German sports has a patron in Adolf Hitler, who will lead it to a prosperous future... The Leader, for us, is the one who reignited the flame of enthusiasm...".
