Shlomo Yudovin's woodcuts - set. Petersburg, 1928

С. Юдовин. Гравюры на дереве. Текст И. Иоффе и Э. Голлербаха. S. Yudovin, Woodcuts. Text: Y. Ioffe and E. Gollerbakh. Leningrad (St. Petersburg), 1928. First edition. Russian.

A booklet with scenes of the Jewish town and Jewish figures - the early woodcuts of the Jewish artist Shlomo Yudovin. Scenes and views by Yudovin while he was part of the Jewish ethnographic expedition led by Sh. En-ski in the Jewish Kolkhoz in Russia in the years 1912-1914.

Solomon Borisovich  Yudovin (1892-1954) was born in the village of Byshinkovits, in the Russian Empire (now Belarus). He received his first training in art in Vitebsk from Yehuda Penn. In 1910 Yudovin moved to St. Petersburg to study art. After the October Revolution he returned to Vitebsk. The town was at that time the center of a progressive and avant-garde art scene, especially between 1918 and 1922, when the School of Folk Art founded by Marc Chagall operated there. However, Yudovin did not embrace modernism but remained a figurative and realist artist throughout his life. Between 1920 and 1940 most of his work was devoted to Jewish issues inspired by a delegation of Sh. An-ski.
