FIDDLER ON THE ROOF - In 1894, the Jewish writer Shalom Aleichem published the first chapter of the book "Tobiah the Milkman" containing stories in Yiddish about Tobiah the milkman. The book was translated into many languages ​​and sold millions of copies. On September 16, 1957, a play called "Tobias and His Daughters" (based on the book "Tobias the Milkman") written by an American Jewish playwright named Arnold Pearl and directed by Howard de Silva was performed at the Carnegie Theater in New York. In 1964, the Jewish-American playwright Joseph Stein and the composer Jerry Bock adapted "Tovia and His Daughters" into the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". The musical premiered in 1964 on Broadway starring Zero Mostel with choreography and direction by Jerome Robbins. The Broadway production won nine Tony Awards in various categories.
