"Indeed we behaved wildly" - an early letter by SY Agnon - Signature in Agnon's original name "SY Chachkis"

An early and moving letter in the handwriting and signature of SY Agnon to "my sad and beautiful friend", in which he openly expresses his feelings of longing for his friend: "All night I rolled over on my bed and watched the clock ...", And expresses his condolences on the death of his relative: "what can I say, if you knew how much i love you, how much I share your grief, Maybe your grief would not be so heavy on you ..." and strengthen that "G-d will comfort you and he will have mercy and heal your broken heart ...". The letter is signed with the rare signature "SY Chachkis" - Agnon's original name before he changed to 'Agnon' (the name given to Agnon at birth: Shmuel Yosef Halevi Chachkis). After Agnon's signature, the place appears: Wiesbaden (Germany), and Saturday night, without specifying the exact date, or the name of the recipient.

In 1912, Agnon emigrated from his native Galicia to Germany for 12 years. It was during this period that the letter before us was written. Although the name 'Agnon' was adopted in 1908 when he published the story 'Agunot', for some reason in this letter, he chose to sign his original name.

[15] Lines in Agnon's handwriting and signature. Folding marks. Stains. Good condition.
