An enamel kettle manufactured in Oscar Schindler's factory


An enamel kettle made by "The German Enamel Factory" (Die Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik, DEF) of Oscar Schindler. Signed at base: "made in poland 12" .

At the outbreak of World War II and the occupation of Poland by the Germans in September 1939, Schindler moved to Krakow, Poland, in search of business opportunities. In October, he took over on an enamel manufacturing in Zablocie near Krakow. Prior to the Nazi occupation, the factory was owned by a Jew named Nathan Wurzel. In addition, he took over a houseware shop that sold the produce of that factory and was originally owned by another Jew - Julius Wiener. Due to the outbreak of war, Production of pots and pans were prohibited, due to the shortage of metals. Schindler manufactured in his factory, Die Deutsche Emailwarenfabrik, DEF (the German Enamel Factory) cutlery and sold them to the Wehrmacht. The metal residue produced pots and pans and these were sold on the black market. Schindler's factory employed 370 Jewish workers. Schindler expanded his factory and set up a clinic, dining room, office and consumer. at its peak, spanning 45,000 square feet and employing about 800 people.
