San Fran Calif Marked Brass Telegraph Key Register - An exceptional piece of early telecommunications history, this antique clockwork telegraph register and telegraph key assembly comes mounted on a rich hardwood base. Made with precision-milled brass gearing, heavy electromagnets, a winding key mechanism, and a spring tape guide, the unit features clear period stampings including ”Cal. Elec. Power Co. / San Francisco” along with ”The Secure Arm Switch.” Historically, telegraph registers were used to record incoming Morse code signals by converting electrical pulses sent via the telegraph key or telegraph line into embossed or inked dots and dashes onto a continuously feeding paper tape, driven by the internal clockwork motor. The clockwork mechanism operates when wound and released via the latch, and the set includes the winding key. The item displays an attractive age-appropriate patina across the brass components, minor surface oxidation on iron elements, and light scuffing to the finished wooden baseboard, overall remaining in complete, functional vintage condition.
