Vintage Stassen High Wheel Bicycle - John Isaac Stassen established his engineering roots in London around 1869. During the initial velocipede craze, he patented the ”Eagle Velocipede,” a quirky design that featured a fixed front wheel for pedaling and long rods running to the rear wheel for steering. Recognizing the mechanical limitations of rear-wheel steering, Stassen transitioned to the high bicycle concept between 1869 and 1870. Because his earliest high-wheelers retained structural elements from the older era—such as plain bearings, solid forks, solid metal backbones, and a heavy socket head—they are highly prized by historians as transitional artifacts. This example from 1872-73 in in VG original condition with new rubber tires and new leather on the seat. The original cat gut rear brake is missing although the left handle bar does twist as it should. The original makers tag is on the top front of the fork.
