Bidspirit auction | Early Detroit Stereopticon Projector On
Early Detroit Stereopticon Projector On Stand - An exceptional piece of early projection history, this turn-of-the-century magic lantern stereopticon projector was manufactured by The Legal Stereopticon Supplies Concern of Detroit, Michigan, featuring cast markings for ”IMPERIAL” and ”DSSC” on the upper spider wheel bracket. Used primarily in venues such as theaters, lecture halls, and fraternal lodges to project large glass lantern slides—often for illustrated lectures, vaudeville shows, or song slide presentations—this unit is crafted from heavy cast iron, brass, steel, and aluminum, complete with a classic reddish-brown leather focus bellows, a front brass lens barrel marked ”ECONO,” and a multi-tiered cast iron pedestal stand with openwork platform brackets. Originally operating as an intense carbon arc light system, the lamp housing has been historically converted to an incandescent electric porcelain socket while retaining remnants of its original carbon rod adjustment mechanism. Physical condition is consistent with age and theatrical use, showing widespread surface patina, areas of light oxidation and paint wear on the iron components, minor creasing along the leather bellows, and fraying to the vintage braided wiring; optical lenses remain intact and clear with no visible damage, though electrical components are untested and should be inspected by a qualified electrician prior to use.
