Cabinet Card of Lillie Langtry - Lillie Langtry (1853–1929) was an iconic British society beauty, stage actress, and savvy businesswoman who became one of the most famous women of the Victorian era. Universally nicknamed ”The Jersey Lily”, she successfully leveraged her immense public celebrity and scandalous high-society relationships to build a highly profitable independent career. Born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton on the Isle of Jersey, her breathtaking looks quickly made her a sensation when she moved to London. Artist John Everett Millais painted her portrait titled ”A Jersey Lily,” cementing her famous nickname. She became the first official mistress of Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII). Facing financial hardships, Langtry shocked the British aristocracy in 1881 by becoming the first society woman to cross over into professional acting. She launched massive commercial tours across the United Kingdom and the United States. She eventually took total control of her career, remodeling and managing London's Imperial Theatre under her own banner. Long before modern influencers, she pioneered the concept of commercial celebrity endorsements, lending her face to products like Pears Soap and Brown's Iron Bitters. In 1882, famed New York celebrity photographer Napoleon Sarony captured a historic series of portraits featuring Langtry during her highly publicized first tour of the United States. These portraits were widely circulated as cabinet cards, showcasing Langtry's famous profile, elaborate Victorian fashion, and theatrical presence.
